Noonan Drives to Barney Oldfield Win

Casey Noonan won the 40-lap 19th Annual Barney Oldfield UMP Late Model Feature at Oakshade Raceway on Saturday night.

An outstanding field of drivers, including NHRA drag racer Cruz Pedregon, was on hand to compete for the coveted Oakshade Raceway Barney Oldfield Trophy. Unfortunately the competition proved to be too stiff as Pedregon failed to make it in to the feature.

Kevin Reeve started on the outside of the front row after winning his heat event earlier in the night and snatched the early lead from pole sitter Mike Bores.

Defending Barney Oldfield Race Champion Ronnie Perrine Jr. from Lima, Ohio, pressured Reeve for the lead during the first quarter of the race.

The first yellow flag flew on lap 11 after Ky Harper’s car rolled to a stop in turn number two. Mike Bores, Mike Miller and last week’s feature winner Bill Hahn all piled up on the ensuing restart to bring out second caution.

Casey Noonan started ninth and worked his way up to take the lead from Reeve at the midway point of the race and then pulled away from the rest of the field.

Rusty Schlenk worked his way up to second and began to reel in the race leader, but didn’t have enough laps to close the distance on Noonan.

Noonan went on to a convincing win picking up the check for $4400 for winning the 19th Annual Barney Oldfield Race. Former UMP Late Model Track Champion Rusty Schlenk finished second with Kevin Reeve slipping back to finish third. Last year’s Barney Oldfield winner Ronnie Perrine Jr. finished fourth with Dusty Moore fifth.

Rusty Smith took advantage of starting on the pole of the UMP Sportsman Feature event and he captured his second feature win of the year.

Mike Jessen challenged Smith for the lead for most of the race getting alongside the 71 car on a few occasions, but Smith was able to hold him off.

Brian Fisher finished third followed by Scott Mills and Brad Mills. Oakshade’s UMP Sportsman points leader fell out of competition before the finish of the race with mechanical problems.

Chris Henry took another small bite out of Jim Scout’s UMP Bomber points lead by winning his fourth A Main of the year with Scout finishing in second.

Brett Miller made his way to the front past Henry near the end of the race as a late race caution set up a two lap shootout to the finish. Miller led the field back to the green flag and appeared to suffer a flat tire as he spun down the backstretch returning the lead back to Chris Henry.

Garry Domoe finished third with Craig Dippman and Jeff Foks Jr. rounding out the rest of the top five finishers.

Dan Shaffer looked strong in the UMP Bomber B Main, grabbing the lead early after starting on the outside of the second row. Shaffer then proceeded to open up his lead over the rest of the field until late in the race.

George Laney took the lead after a restart for a caution and then lost it as he slipped up high in turn four as the leaders were coming to the white flag. Shaffer reclaimed the lead briefly, but Laney got back by Shaffer for the lead and went on to pick up the victory with Shaffer settling for second.

B.J. Gregory was third with Dustin Sautter and Terry Rushlow fourth and fifth respectably.

Ron Leonard held off Billy Brown in the UMP Bomber C Main to earn his second feature win of the year. Marty Bloomer finished third followed by Brice Luttrell and Jerry Signor.

The American Late Model Series returns this coming Saturday night for the Butch Wildermuth Memorial paying $3000 to the Late Model Feature winner. UMP Sportsmen, UMP Bombers and the exciting UMP Hornets will also be in action. Gates open at 4pm with racing at 7pm.
