On Saturday, August 4th, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm, Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio will be hosting the Links Zone “Cans From Race Fans” food drive to help benefit local organizations and food pantries.
Founded in 2009, Cans From Race Fans was organized by Michigan racer Alvie Haynes in an effort to not only help local underprivileged families, but to also raise awareness within the racing community about the need for such an organization. Since its inception, the group has helped thousands of families from the respective race tracks it has worked with. Ohio race fan Dan Rice recently caught wind of the Michigan-based organization and, after a call from Haynes, has used the group’s banner to host the Saturday, August 4th event at Oakshade Raceway.
“I always try to pick a local charity to support each year,” said Rice, who hosts The Links Zone at intermission each week at Oaksahde. “Knowing that the economy hasn’t bounced back, I saw a way to help the community that supports Oakshade Raceway without asking for money. This will directly benefit families within Fulton County. The Links Zone is a fun time for kids during intermission, but we always try to teach the concept of ‘giving back’ in your community.”
In effort to entice fans to bring their non-perishable food items to the event, Rice has reached out to the racing community in another way. By asking for and receiving a wide array of prize donation – ranging from autographed diecast collectibles to restaurant gift cards to oil changes – Rice will be able to raffle off these items to those who bring canned goods to the event.
The early feedback and support Rice has received has already exceeded his expectations. “A lot of great folks have already stepped up,” he said. “Everyone from professional NASCAR teams to the local racers to area businesses … I think we have upwards of 100 total prizes that people (who bring food) have a chance to win through random ticket draws. My goal is to provide upwards of 4,000 pounds of food to these local food pantries. The record is a little over 3,000 pounds and I think our fans at Oakshade can beat that.”
The food donations will be distributed to one of three locations in Fulton County, including FISH of Wauseon, Open Door of Delta, and a location still to-be-announced in Fayette
